East Dundee hosts Frosty Family Fun Day
The village is offering families a chance to build Frosty the Snowman or create an original snowman at East Dundee’s Frosty Family Fun Day.
The event, presented by Tovar Snow Professionals, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21 at the Depot, 310 N. River Street, East Dundee.
Twenty big piles of snow will be available, but spots are limited. Reservations can be made by picking up a form at the Depot, at East Dundee Village Hall or signing up on the village’s website by Friday. There is a $10 donation to the Dundee Foundation to reserve each spot.
Autoharpist returns to Highland Avenue Coffeehouse
Autoharpist Bryan Bowers is performing at Elgin’s Highland Avenue Coffeehouse at 7 p.m. Friday.
Bower’s appearance at the Highland Avenue Coffeehouse, in the fellowship hall of the Highland Avenue Church of the Brethren, 783 W. Highland Ave., is a return performance. More than 40 years ago, Bowers performed at the Colloquy Coffeehouse, also on Highland Avenue, a drop-in center and performance venue for young adults created as a joint venture of several Elgin churches, according to a news release from the coffeehouse.
People Magazine called Bowers, “the leading virtuoso on the autoharp,” according to the release.
Bowers was mesmerized as a child by the old call-and-answer songs of the field workers and gandy dancers (railroad laborers) near his home in Virginia. Then he encountered the uniquely American instrument the autoharp and began to play, the release stated.
When he moved to Seattle in 1971 he played for coins on the street and in bars. Coming back East, he performed in bluegrass festivals and began touring, the release stated.
In 1993 Bowers was inducted into the Autoharp Hall of Fame. FRETS Magazine listed him in its First Gallery of Greats alongside luminaries Chet Atkins and Itzhak Perlman, it stated.

Recycling Event in St. Charles Jan. 14
The next Kane County Recycles Event will be held between 8 a.m. and noon on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 540 S Randall in St. Charles. There will not be another event until April 1.
At the January event, residents can recycle books of any age and condition and electronics, such as computers, keyboards, laptops, printers, stereos, cell phones, microwaves and Christmas lights.
The county also take televisions (any size or age) and monitors, but there is a cost. The fee will be $25 for screens under 21 inches (measured diagonally) and $35 for screens 21 inches and over. The fee may be paid online in advance or onsite by exact cash or card. It is recommended that you pay online in advance (http://recycle.eworksesi.org/) if possible and bring your receipt to any drop-off or the collection event.
The fee that you pay for screened equipment goes directly to the County’s contracted electronics recycler, eWorks, a non-profit whose main mission is to employ developmentally disabled individuals, according to a news release.

No hazardous waste or large household appliances such as washers and refrigerators are accepted.

Get fit with South Elgin Parks and Rec program
The South Elgin Parks and Recreation department is offering Cardio-Kickboxing, which can burn up to 550 calories per class, according to a news release.
Classes begin at 6:50 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11 at the Municipal Annex, 10 N. Water St., South Elgin. The fee for residents is $70 (for a 10 week session) and the fee for non-residents is $80 (for a 10 week session).
The class is a full body workout, including boxing techniques like jabs, punches, and upper cuts.
Gail Borden offer basic First Aid for children
Children in kindergarten and first grade can learn the basics of First Aid and safety skills at a program offered at Gail Borden Public Library’s Rakow Branch, 2751 Bowes Road, Elgin.
The program will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, in the branch library’s Shales Living Room.
Children will learn how to get help, how to stay calm in an emergency, what to do in case of a fire and how to control bleeding, according to a news release. The class is presented by the American Red Cross-AmeriCorps Safe Families Program.

Snowmobile club to meet in Elgin
The Elgin Cold Ducks snowmobile club will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at 7:30 p.m. at Colonial Cafe, 600 South McLean Blvd. in Elgin.
The club promotes family snowmobile and social events including local and regional snowmobile trips, according to a new release.
