Prairie State College reopened Monday after an electrical fire closed the college for eight days, disrupting the third week of classes.
A college spokeswoman said administrators met several times during the week after the fire and are already implementing a plan to make up for lost time in the classroom.
On Jan. 28, a fire alarm went off in the main campus building, which was evacuated by campus police, a college spokeswoman said.
A failed transformer in the basement started the fire and caused a power outage in southeast portion of the building, according to a statement from the college.
A generator is now providing power for a portion of the school until the college’s facilities department locates a replacement transformer. Other portions of the college are receiving electrical power.
A property restoration specialist was brought in to clean up smoke and residue. The building remained closed until an industrial hygienist checked off on the clean up.
Administrators closed the college because many administrative departments were without power.
