New Bears cornerback Marcus Cooper wrote an open letter to Chicago on Tuesday.

If he’s as good at intercepting passes as he is at appealing to the passion of Bears fans, the $8 million the Bears guaranteed him as part of a three-year deal will turn out to be money well spent.

In the letter Cooper, 27, posted to his Twitter account, he masterfully pushed fans’ buttons by mentioning several past Bears greats — last name only, of course — extolling the organization’s tradition of great defense, asserting the city of Chicago is “built on toughness” and promising a Gayle Sayers-workmanlike approach to his work as opposed to the flashier Jim McMahon. He not only referenced the Lombardi Trophy, but also the NFC championship trophy named for George Halas.

Cooper finished his message by promising: “I will work work hard for you, I will never quit, I will sweat and bleed for you.” Give him credit: It was a power move to becoming a fan favorite, as the replies to his tweet proved.
