“United Shades of America” host W. Kamau Bell, who spent part of his childhood on the South Side, announced Tuesday that his first book is due out May 2.
“The Awkward Thoughts of W. Kamau Bell: Tales of a 6’4″, African American, Heterosexual, Cisgender, Left-Leaning, Asthmatic, Black and Proud Blerd, Mama’s Boy, Dad, and Stand-Up Comedian” explores race relations, fatherhood, the state of law enforcement, comedy and other topics.

Bell, a University of Chicago Laboratory Schools graduate, has a busy spring ahead.
The new season of his podcast “Politically Re-Active with W. Kamau Bell and Hari Kondabolu” is set to start Wednesday. Season 2 of his CNN docu-series “United Shades of America” is slated to premiere in late April.
Bell’s nationwide tour is scheduled to stop at the Arts Center of Oak Park on May 4 and at the Vic Theatre on June 16.
