Open enrollment for EMT courses

The Franciscan Health Dyer and Hammond Emergency Medical Services Academy will offer a summer course from 6 to 10 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning Monday through Aug. 17 at the Hammond campus, 5454 Hohman Ave. EMT certification is the minimum level of accreditation needed to provide patient care in an ambulance. Upon completion of the course, students will have working knowledge of basic life support care, ambulance operations, Hazmat awareness, anatomy and physiology. Rain barrel program in Merrillville

The Merrillville Stormwater Utility department’s annual rain barrel program is underway. Any Northwest Indiana resident or business can order a 55-gallon rain barrel made of recycled materials at www.upcycle-products.com/ by May 2. Order forms also are available at the Merrillville Stormwater Resource Center, 7404 Broadway Ave.; in the clerk-treasurer’s, planning and building and town manager’s offices, 7820 Broadway; at the public works department, 13 W. 73rd Ave.; and at the parks department office, 5750 Tyler St. The rain barrels are available in terra cotta, gray, blue or black, and cost $54 each if paid by check, $56.50 each if paid online with a credit card. Schererville Parks and Recreation will offer Party in the Park at Redar Park, 217 Gregory Ave., Schererville, with music, entertainment, food trucks and vendors. Indiana Dunes Tourism Awards luncheon

The Indiana Dunes Tourism annual Recognition of Service Excellence Awards luncheon is 11:30 a.m. May 10 at Sand Creek Country Club, 1001 Sand Creek Drive, Chesterton. Northern Indiana Tourism Development Commission Executive Director Dan Bearss will be the keynote speaker. Benefit for St. Jude House

Stand Up for St. Jude House, an evening of comedy, dinner and silent and live auctions, will begin at 6 p.m. May 11 at the Halls of St. George, 905 E. Joliet St., Crown Point. Popcorn Festival poster contest

Valparaiso Events is looking for creative designs for the 2017 Valparaiso Popcorn Festival poster contest. The winning entry will be the marketing focus for this year’s event and the artist will receive $1,000. Runner-up will receive $300. Photos sought for exhibition and contest

Indiana Landmarks and the Indiana Museum of Contemporary Art invite photographers to submit pictures of special Hoosier locales for the exhibition Meaningful Places. Photo subjects can be any place that holds meaning, whether it’s personal, communal, visual, artistic, historic or natural. The exhibition will open to the public July 15 at the Rapp Family Gallery on Indiana Landmarks’ campus, 1201 Central Ave., Indianapolis, and will be on display through July 28. Cash prizes of $150, $100 and $50, plus an annual membership in iMOCA and Indiana Landmarks, will be awarded to the photographers whose work garners the most votes in a ballot of exhibition visitors. Up to three images can be submitted for the contest via email by May 15. Entrants will be notified of acceptance by May 31. Registration open for symposium

Registration is open for the eighth annual Living Health, Balance and Hope symposium from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 25 at the Harre Union at Valparaiso University, 1509 Chapel Drive. Hosted by the Porter-Starke Services Foundation, the event will feature mental health leaders, including Dr. Christine Padesky in a keynote breakfast speech, and a full-day conference. The symposium offers six hours of continuing education units to mental health professionals who attend the full-day event. The cost is $35 for the keynote breakfast presentation, 8 to 9:30 a.m.; $135 for the full-day conference, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and $120 for a partial day, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., which includes lunch. Hobart police hiring full-time officers

Applications for full-time police officers will be available beginning Monday at the Hobart Police Department’s records department, 705 E. 4th St. Eligible candidates must be in good physical condition, a high school graduate and between 21 and 36 years old. Candidates older than 36 must be a member of the Indiana Municipal Police and Firefighters Pension Fund. Indiana Law Enforcement Academy graduates and/or honorable military service are preferred, but not required. Applications can be obtained from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Fridays and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays through May 31. Physical agility testing and a written exam will take place June 11.
