Elgin High School’s Breann Tomaso was named 2017 Illinois High School Counselor of the Year, the District U46 announced Monday.
The Illinois School Counselor Association named Tomaso, a counselor for four years and previously a science teacher, after receiving a recommendation from colleagues.
“Bre goes out of her way to make a big difference in the lives of students, whether it is getting to work early or going the extra mile,” said Rachel Ginter, an Elgin High counselor. “She even uses her teaching experience to tutor students in her office in biology, chemistry and physics to help them succeed.”
Tomaso was recognized during Monday’s U46 school board meeting, receiving a certificate of achievement from the board and district administration.
“It is an acknowledgment of an exceptional counselor…the recipient must be responsible for innovations in the counseling program, providing leadership and further development of existing services, for demonstrating leadership in professional counseling associations, and for performing an outstanding service to the community,” said district spokeswoman Mary Fergus before CEO Tony Sanders and board member Sue Kerr congratulated Tomaso.
