Brian O’Malley thinks fishing is a great outlet for kids. “It gives them an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and try something new. It provides good stress relief and promotes social bonding,” said the Buffalo Grove Park District recreation supervisor.

Youngster ages 1-14 can reap those benefits at the Huck Finn Fishing Derby, 8-10 a.m. June 3 at Green Lake Park, 1101 N. Green Knolls Drive.

Kids will learn different fishing techniques there. “Every year, the Chicagoland Musky Hunters volunteer at the event,” O’Malley noted. “They help participants put bait on their hooks and answer other fishing questions.”

Kids should bring their own fishing poles; corn bait will be provided.

Each participant will receive a gift bag and awards will be given for the longest fish, most fish caught, most unique catch and most colorful fish. Last year’s winner of the most fish caught landed 11 of them.

The cost is $3 for residents; $4 for nonresidents.

Triple treat

Kids ages 6-13 will run, swim and bike during the Whipper Snapper Youth Triathlon, 9-11 a.m. June 3 at the Olympic Indoor Swim Center, 660 N. Ridge, Arlington Heights. Watch your kids compete. Every participant will receive a medal. The cost is $29 for residents; $44 for nonresidents. Registration is required.

Parents, prepare to play

Getting kids and parents playing together is Jim Gill’s goal. The award-winning, singer/musician/songwriter/writer will show how it’s done when he shares Family Music, 10:30-11:30 a.m. June 8 at Barrington Area Library, 505 N. Northwest Highway. Barrington Area Library cardholders will be seated first at this drop-in event.

Singing for Earth

Songs about nature fill HomeEarth, the latest CD from the popular family entertainers Wendy & DB. They will share songs from that CD plus numbers from their other albums during World Environment Day, June 3, at Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake Cook Road, Glencoe. The event runs from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wendy & DB and their Funn Band, will perform at 1:30 p.m. and 2:45 p.m.

There will also be a variety of nature-related activities during the free World Environment Day event.

Charge!

Children of all ages will learn about electricity through hands-on activities when Science Alliance presents The Electrical ZAP!, 1-2 p.m. June 3 at Palatine Public Library, 700 N. North Court. They will experiment with the Van de Graaff generator and the Tesla coil. Registration is required.
