“SpongeBob SquarePants,” the musical based on the Nickelodeon cartoon series with a cult following, will open on Broadway Dec. 4, Nickelodeon announced Monday. Director Tina Landau’s production will play the Palace Theatre, 1564 Broadway.
All four of the lead performers from the show’s pre-Broadway tryout — Ethan Slater, Lilli Cooper, Danny Skinner and Gavin Lee — are returning to their roles.
“SpongeBob” tried out in Chicago last summer, where it was reviewed as a show both with potential and needing work. But it was not able to secure its anticipated Broadway berth until now.
Penned by Kyle Jarrow, “SpongeBob” features music by a wide range of composers, from Cyndi Lauper to John Legend to the Plain White Ts, all billed as SpongeBob fans.
