National Lakeshore programs
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore will host three programs Saturday. Celebrate National Get Outdoors Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Dunes Learning Center, 700 Howe Road, Porter, with guided hikes, science games, camp crafts, live music from School of Rock and a picnic lunch on the lawn. An insect program with the Chicago Field Museum’s Jim Louderman will be from noon to 4 p.m. at the Paul H. Douglas Center, 100 North Lake St., Gary. A guided hike will follow to look for insects in Miller Woods. Join a ranger for a sunset and campfire program from 8-9:30 p.m at Kemil Beach on East State Park Road (300 E), one mile north of U.S. 12, Beverly Shores. Fetching Market to benefit St. Michael Parish
More than 100 specialty vendors will be featured at Fetching Market No. 11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at St. Michael Parish, 1 W. Wilhelm St., Schererville. Admission is $5 per person, children 12 and younger are free. In addition to repurposed furniture, antique and vintage jewelry, unique clothing, accessories and locally made gourmet delicacies, there will be live entertainment throughout the day and local brews, wine and cocktails. Loretta Hearnes-Thames concert at Glen Theater
The African American Achievers Youth Corps, Inc., Brothers’ Keeper Shelter for Homeless Men and Faith Tabernacle Ministry will present Evangelist Loretta Hearnes-Thames in concert 7 p.m. Saturday at the Glen Theater, 20 W. Ridge Road, Gary. A former state minister of music with the first Jurisdiction of Indiana, Thames is a member of the Hearnes Family Singers, and a former associate member of the Ricky Dillard and the New Generation Chorale and Universal Choir of Indiana and Illinois. Chalk the Walk event
The fifth annual Chalk the Walk event, sponsored by the Family and Youth Services Bureau, will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on the sidewalks surrounding the Porter County Courthouse, 16 E. Lincolnway, Valparaiso. More than 100 3-by-3-foot squares will be filled with drawings created by people of all ages and skill levels. Each drawing is sponsored by an area business, organization or individual. If there is rain in the morning, the event will begin later in the day. In addition to artwork, there will be live music, a caricature artist, and children’s activities such as face painting and story circles. More information is with Jackie Gray at 219-464-9585.
Lilly Endowment accepting grant applications
The Lilly Endowment is accepting applications for its annual Teacher Creativity Fellowship grant. The program, in its 31st year, is designed to give Indiana-based educators the opportunity to pursue innovative and research-based projects. The commitment behind this competitive program is to recognize, re-energize and support educators. The foundation will award 100 grants worth $12,000 each next year. Teachers, librarians, guidance counselors, principals and assistant principals in public, private and parochial schools are eligible to apply. Applications are due by Sept. 1.
