Sometimes, a dish is so terribly tasty that, in some strange way, you come to fear it.

It was like that with what The Fifty/50 in Wicker Park has dubbed its honey butter flash chips, a bar snack so alluring I eventually had to remove it from my wife’s reach, lest she harm herself. She thanked me later.

These chips are simply too good.

Chef Jake Peterson slices potatoes “as thin as possible,” he says, and fries them “until they’re golden and slightly underdone.” Then, he tosses the chips into a heated mixture of honey, spices and butter. A chilly scoop of vanilla ice cream plopped on top of the heap works to caramelize the warm honey butter.

“People drive in from the suburbs for this dish,” says operating partner Eddie Mahoney.

Honey, butter, chips and ice cream: sweet, savory, crisp and creamy. Think about that. You want it — but exercise caution, and eat responsibly.
