Oak Park village spokesman David Powers said Friday afternoon that a gas leak, which had caused the evacuation of several downtown Oak Park buildings, has been stopped.

He said the gas main break was caused by construction nearby. Powers said it occurred Friday morning on Westgate Street west of Marion Street within a construction zone.

Both streets had been closed and some buildings evacuated. At about 2 p.m. Friday, Powers said he expected the evacuation would likely end shortly.

Powers said he was notified that Nicor had stopped the leak. He said there was no word on how long the full repair would take, but he said the affected gas line served only the new Emerson development and that no other buildings in the area should be affected.
