The Mexican state of Jalisco, known as the birthplace of Mariachi music, will bring some of its best to Chicago on August 30, for Mexico en el Corazón 2017, a mariachi spectacle featuring the Ballet Folklorico of Guadalajara and Mariachi Juvenil Colotlán, in Millennium Park.

In its third year, Mexico en el Corazon will host 17 performances in 16 cities across the U.S., including seven shows in the Chicagoland area.

The free event, sponsored by the North American Institute for Mexican Advancement (NAIMA) and the Government of Jalisco, will feature music, dance and songs from Mexican culture and folklore.

“The diffusion of these artistic expressions allows us to get closer to our traditions and generates a greater identification among Mexican immigrants, while at the same time reinforcing in the general community the recognition of the great contributions of our art and culture in the United States,” according to a press release from NAIMA.

Ballet Folklorico Guadalajara has performed across Europe, Asia and South America, including at multiple editions of the Pan American Games, in 2007 and 2011.

The show also includes local talents Jesus Ramos, the Mariachi Heritage Foundation and Sones de Mexico Ensemble Chicago.

While the performance is free, organizers stress space is limited. Tickets may be booked in advance through the NAIMA website.
