Prairie Fest to feature tours, animals
Campton Township Prairie Fest is set for 1 to 5 p.m. Sept. 23 at Corron Farm, 7N761 Corron Road in Campton Hills.
Admission is free. The event will feature tours of the 1850s brick Corron home; tractor pulled wagon tours of the savanna, wetlands and prairie; square dancing demonstrations; a children’s corner with crafts and a chance for children to feed the goats; and refreshments.
Gail Borden Library hosts book sale, art fair
The Gail Borden Public Library Foundation is hosting its 6th Annual Book Sale & Art Fair Thursday to Sunday at the main library, 270 N. Grove Ave. in Elgin.
Books and media for adults, teens, and children will be for sale at the Main Library, including coffee table books, gardening, cookbooks, military history, new fiction, CDs and DVDs, according to a news release from the library. Proceeds help fund exhibits and events for the library community.
Local artists joining the event include Jane Erlandson, Luis Padron, Alex Waskelo, Arnold Kinast. Anna Vannoni, Daniel Gavin and Zelda Vidal.
There will be a preview sale 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Admission to the preview sale is $10.
Admission to the sale Friday to Sunday, during library hours, is free. Library hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and noon to 5 p.m?. Sunday.
Pet adoption event in Elgin
On Saturday, September 16, Willow Lake Estates will be partnering with A Little R&R Animal Shelter, a local pet shelter, to host a pet adoption event 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, at the community’s clubhouse, 161 W. River Rd. in Elgin.
The event is open to the public and is an opportunity for the Egin community to play with and possibly adopt a pet, according to a news release.
Free speech topic of discussion at Aurora University
Aurora University is hosting government and media members in a panel discussion about free speech and the role of a free press at noon Monday.
The event is free and open to the public. Community members can register for the event at auartsandideas.com.
Panelists will discuss the contemporary challenges facing free speech vs. freedom from hateful speech, according to a news release. A question-and-answer session with the panel will follow the discussion.
Interim director announced for Geneva Christian School
Geneva Christian School has announced Mary Sotiroff as the new interim director for the 2017-18 school year.
She has worked in education for over 20 years, most recently as a math and science teacher in Elgin.
“What a blessing it is to welcome Mary to our school. We are confident that she will make an incredible impact to inspire, nurture and grow GCS,” said Tonya Hubbartt, board director, in a news release.
The school is at 1900 Averill Road in Geneva.
DuPage Forest Preserve District looking for input
The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County invites residents to contribute to a new five-year development plan by sharing their thoughts on natural areas and educational and recreational programs at the county’s 62 forest preserves at six upcoming community meetings.
The meetings are:
Sept. 19, 7 to 8:30 p.m., Itasca Community Library, 500 W. Irving Park Road, Itasca.
Sept. 26, 7 to 8:30 p.m., Mayslake Peabody Estate, 1717 W. 31st St., Oak Brook.
Oct. 3, 7 to 8:30 p.m., West Chicago Park District ARC Center, 201 W. National St., West Chicago.
Oct. 18, 7 to 8:30 p.m., Naperville Municipal Center, 400 S. Eagle St., Naperville.
Oct. 25, 7 to 8:30 p.m., College of DuPage, Health & Science Center Room 1301, 425 Fawell Blvd., Glen Ellyn.
Oct. 30, 7 to 8:30 p.m., Indian Prairie Public Library, 401 Plainfield Road, Darien.
In addition to these meetings, the Forest Preserve District is sending surveys to randomly selected DuPage County households in the mail or by email and collecting opinions online. Details and updates will be posted at dupageforest.org/master-plan.
The Forest Preserve District last completed a master plan in 1992.
“These preserves are yours and should reflect the type of nature programs and recreational activities you’re interested in,” said Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore in a news release. “This is your chance to share your vision with us.”
