PNW showcases Mayan inspired art

Coinciding with Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs through Oct. 15, Purdue University Northwest is exhibiting the Mayan Procession, a 14-piece collection of life-sized paintings depicting figures representative of indigenous Guatemalan groups, by noted artist Winifred Godfrey. In addition, a reception featuring Godfrey will be held from 4-6 p.m. Oct. 5 in the the Student Union and Library, 2200 169th St., Hammond. The event is free and open to the public. Methodist Hospitals to offer classes, memorial service

Methodist Hospitals will offer the following programs to members of the Northwest Indiana community this month. Smoking Cessation classes, based on the American Lung Association’s Freedom from Smoking Program, will be held from 5-7 p.m. Monday evenings beginning Monday through Nov. 13 on the Northlake campus, Conference Room A, 8701 Broadway, Merrillville. Fall Career Expo at PNW’s Hammond campus

Job-seeking local residents are invited to attend the Purdue University Northwest Fall Career Expo from 1-2 p.m. Friday at the university’s Fitness and Recreation Center, 2320 173rd St., Hammond. The event is free to the public and provides opportunities to connect with more than 70 employer representatives for jobs and internships. Portage to present Trunk-or-Treat

The City of Portage will host their annual Trunk-or-Treat event from 5-8 p.m. Oct. 27 at Founders Square Park, 6300 Founders Square, Portage. Historical society membership meeting

There will be a membership meeting of the Merrillville Ross-Township Historical Society at 1 p.m. Sunday at the history museum, 13 W. 73rd Ave., Merrillville. Topics of discussion will be a review of activities from 2017, plans for improvement and new displays for 2018. A short video on the U.S. involvement in World War I will be shown. The museum is open to the public from 1-4 p.m. Sundays through October. Admission is free, and new members are welcome.
