After six years of planning and several false starts, Pipeworks Brewing is hoping to open a brewpub in Logan Square.
Pipeworks co-founder Gerrit Lewis said the six-year-old brewery has an agreement to buy a 101-year-old building at 2614 N. California Ave. where it would open a brewpub, probably in early 2019.
Though the deal appears to have the support of Alderman Scott Waguespack, it still hinges on the approval of community groups, Lewis said. The building is currently a practice space for musicians.
Lewis said the plan would likely be to install a 10-barrel brewing system “to make more experimental beers, more fun beers, hopefully some sour beer — things in line with what we did at our original location.”
Pipeworks opened in 2012 at a tiny facility on Western Avenue, but moved to a far larger production brewery on McLean Avenue in 2015. Lewis said the hunt for a brewpub space has been ongoing for several years, has included “dozens of possible locations.”
Pipeworks was close to acquiring a building on Western Avenue and Moffat Street last year, but the project fell through when a developer offered more money at the last minute, he said.
“It’s something that could have been opened a year ago, but we didn’t want to force anything,” Lewis said.
Lewis said Pipeworks has an agreement to collaborate with a chef who has “a long and notable Chicago resume,” but he declined to say who.
“The food will be just as important an element as the beer,” he said.
Logan Square Preservation will host a meeting to discuss the possible brewpub Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. at Seventh Day Adventist Church, 2840 W. Logan Blvd.
