John Kass Wednesday spoke about the heroism of the two men who confronted and chased the Texas church shooter.
Now, I don’t agree with 90 percent of Kass’ political views, but I wholeheartedly agree with his calling their actions the epitome of “apolitical American virtue.” These men did not hesitate to get involved, and like many who’ve done similar deeds, do not consider themselves as heroes, just good citizens.
It reminds me of the three Americans on a train in France a couple of years ago who raced down the aisle to pounce on a terrorist with a gun. If the attacker’s gun hadn’t jammed, almost certainly one of the three would have been shot (a British citizen, who was closer to the terrorist, also intervened). The Americans were held in awe by Europeans, but at the same time they were not surprised.
In an age where America is often held in less esteem, it is still a fact that many in other countries know of and appreciate this American virtue as much as we do.
