Lansing police said Wednesday that a Calumet Park man was helping himself to several packages delivered at homes in that suburb and other communities.

Lelan Cooper, 29, was charged with felony theft after a witness Tuesday saw him taking packages off of porches that had just been dropped off by a delivery driver, police said in a news release.

Police have so far identified seven different victims in Lansing and other nearby communities, including Lynwood, according to Lansing Police Det. Lt. Steven Roberts. Police recovered packages from Cooper’s vehicle and have been able to return them to the rightful owners, police said.

Roberts said that the investigation is continuing to determine whether Cooper might be responsible for other package thefts.

With the holiday season bringing a surge of package deliveries to homes, police recommend that packages be retrieved from outside as soon as possible, or that people take advantage of secure delivery options for parcels if they know they won’t be home to accept the package.
