Gary Community School Corp. students received an extended holiday break with the cancellation of classes Thursday and Friday because of frigid weather.

School officials announced the cancellation Wednesday to give parents advance notice, said Amy Marsh, assistant chief of staff to emergency manager Peggy Hinckley.

About 4,700 students in the district began their holiday break Dec. 21 and expected to return Thursday. Most school districts in Northwest Indiana are off all week as part of their holiday vacation period. Most return Monday.

Marsh said with temperatures expected to hover around zero during bus stop waiting periods on Thursday and Friday, school officials decided to cancel classes.
