Land trust donates 17 acres to Indiana Dunes
Shirley Heinze Land Trust has donated 17.34 acres of protected natural land to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore (IDNL). The transfer, which took place last fall, consists of four parcels that lie adjacent to park boundaries. The largest property is 13.73 acres of prairie adjacent to IDNL’s 300-acre Hobart Prairie Grove unit in Lake County that contains a variety of habitats including wetlands, prairie remnants, white oak flatlands, and a rare bur oak savanna. It protects 343 types of native plants and wildlife. Another 1.88-acre parcel of land adjacent to the southern edge of Mnoke Prairie will now become part of the Bailly/Chellberg and Little Calumet River Trail section of the park in Porter County. An assortment of 16 lots totaling 1.55 acres of wooded dunes becomes part of the Miller Woods portion of the park in Lake County. Another small group of lots totaling 0.18 of an acre has been added to the Tolleston Dunes unit in Porter County. South Shore Clean Cities launches radio show
South Shore Clean Cities has teamed with Lakeshore Public Radio to produce “Green Fleet Radio,” a new show airing at 7:23 a.m. during “Morning Edition”; between noon and 1 p.m. during “Regionally Speaking”; and at 4:21 p.m. during “All Things Considered” every Wednesday on 89.1 FM or streaming online at http://lakeshorepublicradio.org/. The shows also will be available in their entirety on http://lakeshorepublicradio.org and www.southshorecleancities.org after they air. South Shore Clean Cities Executive Director Carl Lisek serves as host for the show, interviewing guests in the Lakeshore Public Radio studios in Merrillville on topics pertaining to South Shore Clean Cities’ mission such as sustainable transportation, the nation’s energy security, improving air quality and supporting local jobs and local economy. IU Northwest to offer ‘A Trans Veteran’s Perspective’
Indiana University Northwest invites the campus and community to “Advocating for LGBTQI Rights at IU and the State of Indiana,” a discussion led by Rhiannon Carlson, veteran program coordinator and counselor at IU South Bend, at 1 p.m. Jan. 30 in the Savannah Center, rooms 205/206, 3400 Broadway, Gary. Carlson is a transgender woman who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the 2003 conflict in Iraq. She will discuss how she draws upon her personal journey to support and advocate for LGBTQI rights across IU and the state. The lecture is free and includes light refreshments. Caregiver Support Group meeting
A Caregiver Support Group meeting will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 28 in the Blessed Mother Conference room at Franciscan Health Hospital, 24 Joliet St., Dyer. The support group encompasses Alzheimer’s/dementia, cancer, stroke or other adult care responsibilities and is open to family and friends.
