A driver whose vehicle became stuck on the railroad tracks Tuesday night in Glen Ellyn had to abandon the vehicle before an oncoming train plowed into it, police said.

Around 7 p.m., an inbound Union Pacific West line train stuck an unoccupied vehicle near Main Street, just west of the Glen Ellyn Metra station, Metra spokeswoman Katie Dahlstrom said.

A 75-year-old woman from Willow Springs was driving southbound over the railroad crossing, but, for some reason, turned west and became stuck on the tracks, according to Glen Ellyn Police Sgt. Norman Webber.

The woman exited the vehicle safely before the Metra train hit her vehicle, Webber said. None of the passengers on the Metra train involved in the crash were injured, he added.

The crash caused extensive delays for other inbound and outbound trains traveling on the route. Around 9 p.m., the vehicle and all debris was cleared from the tracks and train service resumed.
