County scholarships available

The DuPage County Department of Community Services is offering college and occupational training scholarships from $500 to $1,500 to help supplement the cost of tuition, books, supplies or other school needs.

The scholarship is for low-income individuals living in DuPage County. Income for the household must be at or below 125 percent of the federal poverty level.

Applications are due May 4.

Applicants are required to provide proof of DuPage County residency, gross household income for the past 90 days and information about members living in the household.

The application must also include a 500-word essay, official school transcripts, two letters of recommendation, a Financial Aid Audit and proof of enrollment in an Illinois accredited institution.

The Community Services Block Grant scholarship is funded through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

Applications are available at the county’s community services office, 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton, or at www.dupageco.org/CSBG.

Special census to start Feb. 23

A special census to see if Naperville qualifies for additional state revenue will begin Friday, Feb. 23, and last about four to six weeks.

Naperville is conducting a partial special census to certify an increase in population in areas that have experienced new growth.

Residents who live within the special census area are asked to participate. Interviews that take about one to two minutes to complete will be conducted daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

A certified growth in population would give the city an increase in state-shared revenues since Illinois income tax, local use tax and motor fuel tax are based on a per capita distribution.

A map identifying homes that will be counted in the partial census is available at www.naperville.il.us/specialcensus. For more information, call the Naperville special census office at 630-305-4479.

Garden plot registration to begin

Residents interested in obtaining a garden plot through the Naperville Park District can request one starting Monday, March 19.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Alfred Rubin Riverwalk Community Center, 305 W. Jackson Ave., Naperville, where the plots are located.

While mail-in and phone-in registration will be accepted, park district officials recommend residents come to the community center so they can see which plots are available.

Nonresident registration begins at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 22.
