Congratulations to Markus Hartman on being named our March Athlete of the Month. Markus will receive a commemorative plaque presented by Country Financial and be featured in this week’s edition of Pioneer Press. Thank you to all of our challengers and voters!

Name: Alyssa Iverson

Year in school: Senior

School: Harvest Christian

Sport: Girls basketball

Season stats: Point guard averaged 18.4 points, 4.4 steals and 3.9 assists and was one win short of leading Lions (28-5) back to state. They were moved up to Class 2A this year after finishing fourth last year in Class 1A. Iverson had 25 points in a 54-50 sectional title game win over Winnebago and 16 in the 53-48 supersectional loss to Marshall

Year in school: Junior

School: Burlington Central

Sport: Wrestling

Season stats: Termini (34-7) won a thriller in the Class 2A state championship match at 145 pounds against Bilal Bailey of Thornton Fractional North. Termini, who was sixth at state last season, went to overtime with Bailey tied at 1-1, but got a takedown with 27 seconds left in OT to win 3-1

Name: Markus Hartman

Year in school: Senior

School: Barrington

Sport: Wrestling

Position: 152 pounds

Season stats: Hartman went undefeated en route to claiming a Class 3A state title. He won the Barrington, Niles West and Mid-Suburban League tournament titles before sweeping the regional, sectional and state crowns

Best game: Hartman avenged his loss in last season’s 145-pound state final by defeating Montini’s Will Lewan 2-0 on Feb. 17 in Champaign. His Broncos also advanced to the Class 3A dual-team state tournament

Quote: “That 3-1 loss in the final last year to Will has stayed with me since,” Hartman said. “Although I’ve taken one match at a time all throughout this year, the truth is my focus has been to get back into the state final, and Lewan.”
