Purdue Northwest hosts CHESS Lecture Series

As part of the College of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences lecture series, Purdue Northwest welcomes University of Chicago professor Ada Palmer who will discuss “Censorship and Information Control from the Inquisition to the Present” at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Center for Innovation and Visual Simulation, 6937 Woodmar Ave. on the Hammond Campus. IU Northwest seeks senior citizens’ input

Indiana University Northwest’s Center for Urban and Regional Excellence (CURE) invites senior citizens age 55 and older to share their ideas for future lifelong learning programming and outreach at one of two sessions: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 2, or 6-8 p.m. March 5 in the John W. Anderson Library Conference Center, Room 105, 3400 Broadway, Gary. CURE’s Senior University program offers courses on subjects such as smartphones, chair yoga and photography, and now seeks input from residents about topics to offer for future sessions. ECPL to host The Black Experience program

The East Chicago Public Library will present “The Black Experience” at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Main Library, 2401 E. Columbus Drive, East Chicago. The program will feature poetry, music, dance and song from local talent. The event is free and open to the public. Guests also are invited to tour the Black History exhibit in the John C. Templeton Gallery, which is housed in the Main Library. Featured in the exhibit are many of East Chicago’s black leaders and influences, including a list of the “first blacks” and their accomplishments in East Chicago. Pulitzer Prize-winning author to speak at Purdue Northwest

Edward Humes, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and non-fiction writer, will discuss “Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash – and the Way Back,” from 3:30-5 p.m. Thursday in Alumni Hall in the Student Union and Library, 2233 173rd St., on the Hammond campus. The event is free and open to the public. The author’s discussion will be followed by a book signing. Registration is at pnw.edu/Garbology-Mar1. Humes also will lead a panel discussion of PNW students and Northwest Indiana environmental experts at 10 a.m. March 2 in the Great Hall of the Dworkin Student Services and Activity Complex at Purdue Northwest’s Westville Campus, 1401 S. U.S. Highway 421. The discussion, titled “Garbology: A PNW Perspective,” is part of Purdue Northwest’s annual Founders Day programming. More information is at www.pnw.edu.

Taltree Arboretum offers spring break camp

Taltree Arboretum and Gardens will host a spring break camp for children in first through fifth grade from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 26 through March 30 at 450 West 100 North, Valparaiso. Campers will learn how to grow and care for plants, find solutions to water pollution and discover the animals that can be found in their own backyard. Daily themes include gardening, wildlife and art with time outdoors, games, crafts and projects. Campers need to bring a lunch, water bottle, closed toe shoes and weather appropriate clothing. Registration is available for the full week or per day. Full week cost is $140 for Taltree members, $150 for nonmembers. Daily cost is $30 for Taltree members, $35 for nonmembers.
