Chicago police are trying to retrace the last known whereabouts of a 51-year-old man who was fatally shot on the Northwest Side only hours into the new year.
Police say the first homicide victim of 2018, identified as Janusz Kolodziejcz, was seen driving erratically before he crashed his Toyota Camry in the 3900 block of West Cornelia Avenue in Avondale.
Kolodziejcz, who lived in the 6900 block of West Belmont Avenue, was pronounced dead on the scene at 2:46 a.m. on Jan. 1 where the car rested on an angle with its passenger door open in front of a fence topped with barbed wire, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
Kolodziejcz’s, whose body could be seen slumped over the steering wheel, died from a gunshot wound to his back, according to police and the office.
Now, investigators are asking for the public’s help in piecing together where Kolodziejcz was between 9:30 p.m. New Year’s Eve and the time he was found unresponsive, 2:20 a.m.
Kolodziejcz is described as Eastern European, about 5-foot-11-inches tall and weighing 190 pounds, with light brown hair and blue eyes.
