The Larkin High School boys basketball team continued celebrating its winning season Wednesday night when its accomplishments were recognized by the Elgin City Council.

Mayor Dave Kaptain presented a proclamation to the players and head coach Deryn Carter honoring their historic 2017-18 campaign, which culminated with a fourth-place finish in the IHSA Class 4A boys basketball tournament last month.

It was Larkin’s first-ever appearance at the state semifinals for either boys or girls basketball. It was also the best showing for a District U46 boys basketball team since Elgin High School reached the state semifinals in 1955.

“We don’t take it lightly,” said Carter, a Larkin graduate who has led the Royals boys to seven consecutive winning seasons. “It was fun doing what we did on the court, but what made it so special: it made lifelong memories for these young individuals. It was the city’s unbelievable support of us throughout the trip, throughout the playoffs.”
