When Cook County had its tax on sweetened beverages, I was surprised they didn’t also try to tax food with salt. How about salt in spaghetti sauce or in pizza? Think about it. Almost everything you can think of is seasoned with salt. I should stop eating altogether. How many people substitute salt for spices in their food? Shouldn’t people use their own judgment if whether they have too much or not too much of something? How about hot dogs at the ballpark? Wow. They’re loaded with sodium. Take a hot dog and see how much sodium is in it. Are you going to tax hot dogs at the ballpark or football games next? It’s never going to happen.

To the person who compared his/her taxes to a friend’s who has a bigger house: does the friend live in the exact same taxing districts as you — schools, fire department, etc.? The assessed valuation is determined by the county but each taxing body sets it’s own tax rate. If you do not feel you are being treated fairly, you should go to your township assessor if you live in the suburbs and protest your assessment. It’s free.

Is there anything good for us? The air we breathe is polluted. The water we drink may not be safe. I just read about home toxins. Air fresheners may cause damage to the liver and kidney. Laundry detergent packets can cause loss of consciousness. So what’s left? Just keep your head up and march along with the time.
