When it’s time to get out of town and let the hair down, a few vacation locations are legendary. Las Vegas, any vice for the right price, protected by a code of silence. Bangkok, Southeast Asia’s pearl of spice and debauchery. Pinecraft, where the bonnets are lacy and the pies are creamy.
Perhaps that last one doesn’t warrant a “Hangover” sequel quite yet. But if you happen to be Amish or Mennonite, Pinecraft, located next to Sarasota, is your Club Med. From fall to spring, thousands of bearded and bonneted vacationers, escaping the icy doldrums of Ohio and Pennsylvania winters, step off of Pioneer Trails buses and breathe in some fresh Gulf Coast air. Dressed as if they just stepped out of a casting call for “Witness,” they carry armfuls of fruit and vegetables, handmade crafts and freshly canned preserves. The parking lot fills with folks on large tricycles (the beachside alternative to horse and buggy) to welcome family and friends.
The Amish first came to the area in the 1920s to farm. The crops didn’t grow so well, but the climate certainly grew on them. They bought houses and businesses and opened restaurants. The community now has around 500 small residences, many of them vacation homes, and Pinecraft has expanded into one of the largest resorts for followers of the faith.
“Resort” is not the optimal word; it’s not exclusive, but it is insular. However, anyone can visit this tightly knit community of varying Amish and Mennonite denominations, who eat, worship, socialize and play together in the Florida sun. Fun seekers tend to gather in Pinecraft Park, dominating the shuffleboard courts and downing freshly churned ice cream from Big Olaf Creamery. Many shuck the rigid clothing and hats that are demanded in the strict communities at home for T-shirts and flip-flops. Some of the younger ones even get a bit saucy, trading in their bulky bathing dresses for bikinis by the beach, though that’s about as common as seeing a bronzed pool boy pitchforking hay in a Pennsylvania barn.
Visitors who want to get a real taste of Pinecraftiness should patronize one of the traditional restaurants. The most longstanding establishment is Yoder’s Restaurant and Amish Village, established in 1975. Yoder’s serves Amish comfort food – meatloaf, liver and onions, roast turkey – and 32 varieties of baked and cream pies. If there’s one food that the Amish have perfected, it’s pie, so even if you’re on the Keto diet, plan a skip day during your Pinecraft visit. Yoder’s also has a market and deli where you can pick up some great cheese, homemade candles, apple butter and, of course, an “I heart pies” T-shirt.
