A judge denied bail for a West Side man on parole accused of fatally shooting a 22-year-old last month in the city’s North Austin neighborhood.
Tarvey Green said nothing as Judge Mary C. Marubio denied him bail Sunday during his brief appearance at the Leighton Criminal Court Building. “We love you, Shorty,” a young man yelled out as Green was taken back to the lockup.
Green, 20, of the 700 block of North Lorel Avenue, was charged with first-degree murder in the June 17 shooting death of Deeshane Grayer.
In court, prosecutors described how Green exited an alley in the 1600 block of North Luna Avenue just after 11:30 a.m. and shot Grayer twice as he sat on a nearby front stoop with a friend. After Grayer fell to the ground, Green stood over him and fired three more shots from a .45-caliber handgun before fleeing back into the alley, according to Assistant State’s Attorney Kathleen Conniff.
Authorities believe Green fled to an awaiting car because of accounts from neighbors who heard car tires screeching away moments after the shooting.
Grayer, of the 1700 block of North McVicker Street, who suffered gunshot wounds to the chest, thigh and buttocks, was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.
At least two eyewitnesses identified Green as the gunman who killed Grayer, according to prosecutors, who didn’t mention a motive for the shooting. Green was arrested Friday, prosecutors said.
Green is scheduled to return to court Monday.
