Call for 2018 South Shore Legends
The South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority is now accepting nominations for The South Shore Wall of Legends to honor individuals or teams whose accomplishments resonate in and beyond Northwest Indiana. Nominations will close at 5 p.m. Sept. 4. The Wall of Legends Project is sponsored by BP Whiting Business Unit. Legends are those individuals who have lived or worked in Jasper, Lake, La Porte, Newton, Porter, Pulaski or Starke County and have had a substantial impact with lasting implications.They may no longer live in Northwest Indiana, but their actions still resonate in and beyond the seven-county region. Inducted last year were the late Dean V. White and Quentin P. Smith. Other Legends include the Tuskegee Airmen of Northwest Indiana; Jean Shepherd; stage and screen star Karl Malden; Apollo 8 Commander Frank Borman; and Indiana’s 20th Civil War Regiment. New Legends will be inducted at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 12th at the Indiana Welcome Center. Submit nominations to the South Shore CVA, 7770 Corinne Drive, Hammond. Fishing Derby date rescheduled
The Festival of the Lakes Fishing Derby originally scheduled for July 21 will be held Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at Wolf Lake Memorial Park, 2324 Calumet Ave., Hammond. The entry fee is a $1 donation to support the Dowling Park Stocking Program. Children ages 15 and under will receive free fishing equipment while supplies last. A free kids fishing seminar will be held at 10 a.m. Trophies will be awarded in several categories. Fishing poles and live bait will be available. Stargazing at the Arboretum
Join Purdue University Northwest astronomers for an evening of star gazing and planet viewing, weather permitting, from 8:30-9:30 p.m. Saturday at Gabis Arboretum, 71 N 500 West, Valparaiso. Prior to the viewing, short night hikes and crafts will be conducted beginning at 7:30 p.m. The event is free with admission. Sprouts! toddler program at the arboretum
Gabis Arboretum will host Sprouts!, an opportunity for families with toddlers to explore nature and create take-home projects, at 10 a.m. Wednesday at 71 N 500 West, Valparaiso. PTLEA fundraiser event tickets on sale
Portage Township Live Entertainment Association (PTLEA), a non-profit organization, will host a fundraiser featuring the Beatles tribute band, American English, at 7 p.m. Sept. 20 at Portage High School East Auditorium, 6450 US-6. Now in its 29th year, PTLEA offers free live concerts at Founders Square Park and Woodland Park during the summer, with funding assistance from Portage Founders Club and Greater Portage Chamber of Commerce. PTLEA also hosts low-cost concerts at Portage High School in the fall and spring.
