Slowik’s column an insult to voters

For the better part of two years, President Trump has been warning the American people of a coordinated attack on him and his presidency by a vast majority of the American media and press. Then to prove his point, he said 300 newspapers recently colluded together to attack his presidency and decry him, calling the press “the enemy of the people”.

While they may not be the enemy of the people, they are certainly no friend, as evidenced by columnist Ted Slowik’s shocking revelation that, “Trump won. That didn’t mean editorial boards got it wrong. They correctly counseled who should win, not who would win.”

In other words, Ted is saying that we simple-minded, unintelligent Neanderthals didn’t have the mental capacity to judge for ourselves who would be a better commander-in-chief. This utter elitist arrogance is the main reason why the American people have lost all trust and faith in the media and press. His assertion that Obamacare is sound policy is devoid of all facts and reality, How and why does Ted ignore the rising premiums and deductibles caused by Obamacare? How does he ignore the millions who were lied to when they lost their doctor and insurance without a single vote from the opposition party?

He then has the audacity to state in his column the media “remains a reliable source of information.” Hilarious. Ted laments that our lives are so busy, we simpletons should just do what these elites tell us to do. I’d say that attitude and approach makes them much closer to authoritarians like Stalin and Mao than Trump will ever be.

Support urged for domestic violence act

The important Violence Against Women Act is now before the U.S. Congress for reauthorization, and I urge residents to ask your member of Congress to support it.

House Resolution 6545 includes critical public safety and life-saving provisions that will enhance law-enforcement’s ability to respond to domestic violence, assist sexual assault victims and remove weapons from abusers. It provides funding for training, victim services, prevention efforts, and legal assistance for victims.

The resources are badly needed. Domestic violence is not confined to any socio-economic class or ethnic or racial group, has many faces and complexities, and is learned, intergenerational behavior. As such, it is a focal point in the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office. In 2017, for example, one-fourth of all misdemeanor cases we charged were for domestic battery. As trends show decreasing crime in recent years, domestic violence cases remain steady, a troubling trend.

Laws implemented in recent years require specialized training and protocols to help police appropriately address the unique trauma that sexual assault victims experience, as well as education for children to understand appropriate and inappropriate touching. VAWA funding is important to assure implementation of these laws.

Further, domestic violence and sexual assault support agencies and shelters rely heavily on resources provided for in this bill.

Women have a right to safety and justice. Please join us and support HR 6545.

Joseph H. McMahon, Kane County State’s Attorney
