A stretch of Dearborn Street in the North Loop was closed for about an hour during Friday evening’s rush hour, due to a suspicious package that police said smelled like gas but which turned out to contain clothes.
Streets between Lake and Randolph were closed in the vicinity for police activity beginning about 4:30 p.m. and ending a little after 5:30 p.m.
“A small bag was discovered by a security guard that smelled like gas,” according to a police media notification. Fire Department crews “along with the Bomb Unit and Hazmat Incident team” were sent to the scene and “the items inside the bag were clothes.”
