YMCA offers before and after school care
Enrollment is now open for the 2019-20 Hobart Family YMCA Before and After School care program. Offered in a supportive learning environment, this program for the School City of Hobart School District and River Forest Community School Corp., is for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. The YMCA offers enrollment for continuous care throughout the school year, including Before and After School care, School’s Out Day Camp, and care during inclement weather. NWI social service fairs
Community Partners will host two free fairs featuring more than 100 local social service and community providers: from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Avalon Manor, 3550 E. Lincoln Highway, Merrillville; and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 25 at Aberdeen Manor, 216 Ballantrae St., Valparaiso. Attendees will engage with professionals from a variety of programs including legal services, financial assistance, mental and physical health care, childcare and substance use treatment. St. Mary Medical Center to host fundraiser
St. Mary Medical Center Auxiliary will host the Linda’s Linens Sale from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday in Conference Room 3A near the West Entrance at the hospital, 1500 South Lake Park Ave., Hobart. The fundraiser will feature a selection of quality, high thread-count sheets, pillows, blankets and throws. A percentage of the proceeds from the sale will go to the Auxiliary in support of the 2020 scholarship fund, which benefits students pursuing a career in the medical field. Polish Heritage Festival
The Polish Heritage Festival will be held Sept. 15 at Friendship Botanic Gardens, 2055 E. U.S. 12 in Michigan City. The event will begin with a Polish-English Mass at 10:30 a.m. in the Symphony Garden, followed by food and festivities from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Featured will be Polish food from Hammond’s Cavalier Inn and bakery goods from Bakers Dozen of South Bend, a beer garden, cultural displays, pisanki (Polish Easter egg) demonstrations, vendors and raffles. Don Quijote Scholarship fun shoot
The scholarship board of the don Quijote Education Fund will host the seventh annual don Quijote Fun Shoot Sept. 15 at the Oakwood Gun Club, 11388 N. Indiana 49 in Wheatfield. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. The $65 entrance fee includes a 100 round sporting clays shoot, refreshments and a lunch including Chef Carlos Rivero’s paella. Participants must provide their own shotguns and ammunition. Ammunition also can be purchased at the club. Participation is limited to 60 shooters. All proceeds will benefit 2019-20 awards offered by the don Quijote Education Fund to promote and develop Spanish language and cultural enrichment for Porter County students through study or travel.
