Authorities said alcohol was believed to be a factor in a Friday night car accident that injured three people and left a car in a ditch off Cline Avenue.

Highland Police spokesman Cmdr. John Banasiak said in a release that emergency personnel were sent to Cline Avenue near 179th Street at around 9:56 p.m. and found a white 2011 Dodge Charger in the ditch, and a silver 2018 Chevy Malibu on the roadway with severe damage.

Initial investigation determined the Chevy, driven by a 32-year-old Dolton, Ill. man, had just gotten off on Cline from eastbound I-80/94 and was heading south when a 44-year-old Gary man driving the Dodge came up from behind and hit the Chevy, Banasiak said.

Highland Firefighters extricated the Chevy’s passenger, a 44-year-old woman from Hazelcrest, Ill., and all three people involved in the crash were taken to area hospitals. None of their injuries were life-threatening, Banasiak said.

The investigation is ongoing.
