At least two adults and one child were injured when a red sedan was hit by an outbound Metra Electric train on the Far South Side, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

The collision happened about 9:15 p.m. at 71st Street and Merrill Avenue in the South Shore neighborhood, said Metra spokeswoman Katie Dahlstrom.

People helped pull passengers from the car, which was dragged about 200 feet, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

Two adults and a child, whose ages were not immediately known, were transported in critical or serious condition to the University of Chicago Medical Center and Comer Children’s Hospital, Langford said.

Another man who was walking near the crash site was also taken to a hospital in fair condition. He told fire officials he was in the car, but officials were still trying to confirm if he was involved, Langford said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, Dahlstrom said. There were 10 passengers on the train at the time of the crash. They were able to exit the train at 10 p.m.
