The India Day celebration joins a growing list of summer festivals in Naperville falling victim to the coronavirus pandemic.

Indian Community Outreach this week announced the cancellation of its annual parade and festival recognizing India’s independence from Great Britain in 1947. India Day was scheduled Aug. 9 at Rotary Hill in Naperville.

Started in 2015, India Day has grown into one of the largest Indian American festivals in the Midwest, drawing tens of thousands of people.

Instead of a large gathering in a park this year, Indian Community Outreach is looking for a safer alternative.

“We are currently working on a possible virtual concert from a big name Bollywood singer, fireworks show, car parade, and more,” the organization noted on its Facebook page.

This month, the inaugural Naper Pride Fest – “Together Under The Big Top” – scheduled Aug. 22 at Naper Settlement was canceled.

Pride Fest organizers said the debut event would be pushed back to 2021.

The same goes for the inaugural Naperville Salute, the city’s new Fourth of July event, which was postponed until 2021 due to “public safety and logistic concerns” from the COVID-19 pandemic.

A fireworks display is still tentatively planned for July 4 at the Frontier Park sports complex on city’s south side near Neuqua Valley High School and the 95th Street Naperville Public Library.
