The Chicago Cubs aren’t scheduled to face the Cincinnati Reds for another two weeks, but they remain confident they will complete the season despite a positive COVID-19 test by a Reds player.

“I think we’re going to play this season,” Anthony Rizzo said Saturday. “This season is getting played. And that’s our mindset. That’s our mentality, and just button everything up. Be as safe as possible. That’s what (our) guys have been doing. And doing a good job.

“It’s very unfortunate for the Reds for that to happen. It’s scary, the unknown. The Cardinals, with their schedule coming up (with two doubleheaders against the Cubs next week), it’s tough. But that’s what it is, and six more weeks of a sprint.”

The coronavirus pandemic is constantly on the mind of outfielder Steven Souza Jr. Morgan Peckman, Souza’s sister-in-law, works in the coronavirus unit at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona.

“You try to block it (the coronavirus) out and take care of our business,” Souza said. “We hear about it and just hope it’s not an entire team again. We care about those guys’ entire safety there. It’s a fraternity in baseball.

“We don’t know what’s going on in that clubhouse or what they’re doing. Sometimes you can do everything right, and this thing can still happen.

“You just hope it doesn’t take down another team. As long as those things are happening and whole teams are not falling apart, we’ll be able to finish this thing in the end.”
