Despite the rain and gloom of the day, staff members and students from Shepard High School in Palos Heights gathered Friday morning for a socially-distanced remembrance of 9/11.
U.S. Air Force JROTC instructors Maj. Dan Johnson and MSgt. Chris Saberniak organized a poignant ceremony that also served as lesson in history; none of their students had been born when the terrorist attacks happened.
The JROTC colorguard brought students to attention to start the ceremony. As trumpet players from the Shepard marching band performed taps, JROTC students lowered the American flag to half-staff while classmates saluted.
Students Nick Bucio, Kiana Gonzalez, Julia Sinisi and Chanel Talbott then took turns reading the presidential proclamation declaring Sept. 11 as Patriot Day.
Cancer Support Center golf outing set
The Cancer Support Center will host its 29th Annual Golf Outing on Monday at Idlewild Country Club, 19201 Dixie Hwy, Flossmoor. The event will feature former White Sox catcher and Baseball Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk along with 18 holes of golf, after party BBQ, silent auction, ball drop fundraiser and musical entertainment.
Cost is $225 for individual golfers and includes golf, drinks and dinner. Tickets for just the after party dinner are available for $60. Registration begins at noon and tee time starts at 1 p.m. Golfers will be ensured a safe outdoor, socially distanced BBQ dinner and after party that begins at 5:30 p.m., which will feature an open bar, silent auction, raffles and live entertainment by Justin Owens Griffins.
The Cancer Support Center continues providing free programs and services to participants impacted by cancer, including extensive virtual, online and phone conference programming and counseling. The Center’s facilities in Mokena and Homewood are open during limited hours for wig appointments and emergency walk-ins.

Lockport Sweets & Savory event returns
The Sweets & Savory Crawl, hosted by the Lockport Chamber of Commerce and local businesses, will return to Lockport for its 7th year from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20. The event features the opportunity to sample sweet and savory bites from 13 participating businesses while supporting local restaurants.
This year’s lineup includes: 933, Cakes XO, Dairy Queen, Ember’s Tap House, Hollingworth Candies, Lock & Mule by Tangled Roots Brewing Co., Mamma Onesta’s Italian Restaurant, Nik & Ivy Brewing Company, Papa Joe’s Restaurant, The Lockport Stagecoach Eatery & Saloon, Taco Patio, The Cupcakery Bakery, and Villa Nova Pizza.
Tickets are $15 with a $30 group rate for up to five participants and are available through the Lockport Chamber of Commerce at lockportchamber.org. Tickets include family fun activities, photo opportunities, and raffles. The School of Rock Mokena is performing live under the cabana at Central Square, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Mark Staehely Pediatric Cancer Foundation.
Session set for older adults on COVID-19 and flu
Palos Heights-based PLOWS Council on Aging presents an online session with timely data about COVID-19 and measures older adults can take to prepare for fall/winter from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Sept. 17.
Dr. Michael Ison, of the Divisions of Infectious Diseases and Organ Transplantation at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine will present the latest update and participate in a question-and-answer session.

Secretary of State’s mobile unit to visit Chicago Heights
To allow motorists to renew their driver’s licenses and purchase vehicle stickers without visiting a driver services facility, the Illinois secretary of state’s office offers a free mobile unit event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22 at the Chicago Heights Park District, 1400 Chicago Road.
The unit operates like a DMV office and offers driver’s license renewals, identification cards and license plate stickers. Attendees must wear face coverings, and social distancing rules must be followed. REAL ID services will not be available at the mobile unit.
