Much has changed since luxury resale company The RealReal announced plans to open its first Chicago store in February. Ever since the coronavirus pandemic forced nonessential shops to close this spring, there have been fewer tourists and shoppers along Chicago’s North Michigan Avenue. Some storefronts remain boarded up after civil unrest this summer. While the economic uncertainty many Americans are facing due to the pandemic is usually good news for resale stores that cater to budget-minded customers, it’s harder to say what that means secondhand luxury goods.
