A second suspect in the armed robbery of a driver on a Niles street earlier this year has been arrested, police said.

A 17-year-old boy from Chicago, who was arrested on June 30, is facing a charge of armed robbery with a firearm in connection with the Jan. 21 robbery of a woman on the 8000 block of Ballard Road, just east of Milwaukee Avenue, police said Friday.

The teen is being charged in Cook County Juvenile Court and is in the custody of a juvenile detention center, said Niles Police Sgt. Kelly Eckardt.

Eckardt would not say what the teen’s role in the robbery was.

According to police, a 60-year-old woman was driving on Ballard Road when she was cut off by an SUV, which stopped suddenly in front of her. A passenger of the SUV jumped out, pointed a gun at the woman and demanded her purse, which she gave him, police said.

A 16-year-old boy from Chicago was arrested by police in February and accused of being the gunman, police said.

According to police, he was found to be in possession of items stolen in the robbery when he was taken into custody for a separate incident.

The 16-year-old is also facing charges in connection with the Jan. 21 robbery and attempted carjacking of a 73-year-old woman outside her home in Morton Grove, according to police.
