Witches, goblins, ghouls and a superhero or two braved the October chill on Friday to see Hubbard Woods Park transformed into a pumpkin patch.
Kyle Berg, superintendent of recreation for the Winnetka Park District, says it’s important that we take the time to gather with friends and family for this ode to Halloween after the challenges of the past year.
“These outdoor October celebrations are so few, you can come in costume or come as you are to gather and celebrate this beautiful time of year with us,” Berg said.
While Pumpkins in the Woods was a stand-alone event, it was held as part of the Winnetka Park District’s seasonal family celebration of Halloween.
This year’s trio of safe neighborhood events included Pumpkins in the Woods on Friday, a Superhero Tractor Ride, Superhero Dash and Winnetka’s first-ever Trunk or Treat events on Saturday, organizers say.
“The Hubbard Woods location especially brings the community into the heart of Winnetka, and while the event is geared toward children, it is really a celebration of fun for all ages,” Berg said.

Pumpkins in the Woods included pumpkin decorating, carnival games, Halloween-themed inflatables and bounce houses, a DJ, costume contest, petting zoo and more.
Participants interested in pumpkin decorating had the option of registering in advance for a pumpkin at $5 each.
Costume categories included the most original, scariest and the funniest.

“We love Park District events and happy to be back in pumpkin in the woods this year, seeing everyone coming together, the kids all dressed up, it’s really so much fun,” Julie Nilan of Winnetka said.
This is the sixth year Pumpkins in the Woods has been held in Winnetka. The event was canceled in 2020 due to pandemic concerns.
Lauren DuPont attended with family on Friday.
“This is a fun opportunity to celebrate with neighbors close to home, it’s a beautiful salute to fall,” DuPont said.
