A Gary man faces several felonies after allegedly kidnapping a woman and trying to rape her.

Michael D. Moore, 39, of the 1000 block of W. 35th Avenue, was charged Monday. An arrest warrant has been issued with orders for him to be held without bail.

A woman whom Moore knew alleged he kidnapped her at gunpoint while she was getting into her car at the flea market off 41st Avenue and Cleveland Street.

He forced her to drive around Gary “looking for an alley” while he punched her repeatedly, ending up near 45th Avenue and Calhoun Street in Calumet Township.

Moore ordered her to undress. He allegedly punched her in the eye when she refused to have sex with him. He was not able to rape her, an affidavit said.

He called his stepfather asking where he could find some women, then forced the woman to drive to the man’s house near 5th Avenue and Madison Street.

At the house, Moore ordered her to give him her keys. As they fought over the keys, one came loose from the key ring. The woman said she was going to look for it outside. When she opened her door, Moore got out, she got back in the car, locked the doors and drove away, court documents said.

He is charged in Lake Superior Court with two counts of attempted rape, three counts of kidnapping, two counts of sexual battery, domestic battery by means of a deadly weapon, intimidation and pointing a firearm.
