East Dundee Depot outdoor market opens Saturday

The Dundee Township Visitor’s Center will hold its first outdoor market of the season from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7, on its grounds at 319 N. River St., East Dundee.

The market features antiques, collectibles, food, seasonal produce, plants, flowers, jewelry, soaps, yard art and other items from local vendors. It’s held every Saturday through Oct. 29 and frequently features special attractions and events.

Elgin High School teacher wins Kane educator award

Elgin High School teacher Juan Figueroa was the recipient of the Regional Superintendent Award during the annual Kane County Educator of the Year awards banquet Friday, April 29, in St. Charles.

Figueroa teaches college-level dual credit courses in Spanish and Spanish Language Arts courses in the school’s dual language program.

Other nominees from School District U-46 were Sandy Ritter at Tefft Middle School in Streamwood for Middle School Teacher of the Year; Faviola Ximena Escobar at Larsen Middle School in Elgin for Middle School Teacher of the Year; and South Elgin High School Assistant Principal Steve Tucker for School Administrator of the Year.

Storyteller Brian “Fox” Ellis will present “Black Hawk’s View of Illinois History” Saturday at the Elgin Public Museum in Lords Park.

Program to explore Black Hawk history in Illinois

Storyteller Brian “Fox” Ellis will present “Black Hawk’s View of Illinois History” from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at the Elgin Public Museum, 225 Grand Blvd. in Lords Park.

Ellis begins his program with his family’s connection to the Trail of Tears and the forced removal of the Cherokee Nation from their ancestral homeland. The audience is then led through time to an encounter with Black Hawk’s Band on the eve of battle.

Two-thirds of the free show is taken directly from Black Hawk’s autobiography.

Side Street hosting pop-up ‘Yellow’ art show

Side Street Studio Arts will host a free reception for the pop-up exhibition, “Monochrome: Yellow,” from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 6, at its 15 Ziegler Court location in Elgin.

Monochrome describes paintings, drawings, sculpture, design or photographs in one color or values of one color. Yellow can describe a color or a mood, a news release said.

Artists working in any medium that adhere to the theme can inquire about becoming part of the exhibition, which will run through Friday, May 20.

South Elgin High student named school board adviser

South Elgin High School junior Angelica Harris will be the student advisor for the District U-46 School Board during the 2022-23 school year.

Harris will attend school board meetings and offer opinions on topics related to students. She is a champion race walker and founded South Elgin High School’s environmental club, according to the application she submitted.

Should Harris be unable to serve the entire term, Madeline Conter, currently a junior at Elgin High School, will take her place.

The current student student adviser is Jessica Pearce, a senior in the STEM Academy at Bartlett High School who is graduating in May.

Pearce and other members of the superintendent’s student advisory board recommended Harris and Conter from 12 students who applied for the position. The school board approved the recommendations April 25.

Owl Prowl being held at Hawthorne Hill Nature Center

Kane Area Rehabilitation and Education for Wildlife will be Owl Prowl, a program on birds of prey, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at Hawthorne Hill Nature Center, 28 Brookside Drive, Elgin.

The session is designed for children ages 5 and older. The cost is $10 for Elgin residents and $12 for nonresidents.
