BBQ to celebrate end of school year set for May 26

A free end-of-the-school year barbecue will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 26, at the Hanover Township Izaak Walton Youth Center in Elgin.

Sponsored by the Hanover Township Youth and Family Services and the Streamwood Park District, the party is the culmination of the activities the two groups have held since September and celebrates the end of the academic year.

The gathering at the 899 Jay St. center will feature food, games and music.

Elgin Mental Health Center receives state funding

Elgin Mental Health Center has been awarded $59,100 in funding from the state’s Rebuild Illinois program for renovation and repair work.

The Capital Development Board announced last week that the center was among agencies in northern Illinois to share in a portion of $51 million available for capital projects.

Rebuild Illinois is the state’s first capital projects plan in almost a decade and the largest ever undertaken, a news release said. It will fund $45 billion in projects, including improvements to roads, bridges, railroads, universities, early childhood centers and state facilities over the next six years.

Castro, Woodstock Institute hosting banking town hall

State Sen. Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, and the Woodstock Institute will hold a town hall meeting on banking, credit, financial services and predatory lending at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, at the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin.

Woodstock Institute is a Chicago-based nonprofit research and policy organization that focuses on fair lending, wealth creation and financial systems reform.

Kane County holding drive-thru rabies shot clinic

Kane County Animal Control will a rabies vaccination and microchip animal clinic from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at Kane County Animal Control, 4060 Keslinger Road, Geneva.

The clinic will be conducted drive-thru style., with pet owners asked to remain in their vehicles and allow staff and volunteers to remove the animal from the car and then return them, a news release said. Participants are asked to wear masks.

Cost for a one-year rabies vaccine with tag is $22 if the animal is neutered/spayed and $40 if it is not. Seniors receive a discounted rate of $10 per animal. Microchips are available for $15. Cash, check, VISA and MasterCard will be accepted.
