Free summer lunches for kids, teens start Monday

Northern Illinois Food Bank and the Elgin Parks and Recreation Department will provide free lunches for anyone 18 or younger from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. weekdays from Monday, June 6, through Friday, Aug. 5, at five city locations.

Meals will be available at College Green Park, 1900 College Green Drive; Cornerstone Park, 1540 Mulberry Lane; Lords Park, 325 Hiawatha Drive; St. Francis Park, 277 Jefferson Ave.; and the Hanover Township Izaak Walton Center, 899 Jay St.

The effort is part of the nationwide USDA Summer Food Service Program. For more information, go to solvehungertoday.org.

Advance signup for Dundee Township 5K ends Monday

Advance registration for the Dundee Township Park District 5K Fun Run in West Dundee closes at midnight Monday, June 6.

No registration will be accepted after that date until the morning of the event on Sunday, June 12. Race day registration is from 7 to 7:45 a.m.

The event starts and finishes at the Randall Oaks Recreation Center, 500 N. Randall Road. Start time for the race is 8 a.m. followed by a 1-mile children’s run starting at 9 a.m. and a half-mile children’s walk at 9:15 a.m.

Fees are $40 in advance and $50 race day for adults and $20 in advance and $30 event day for children.

Elgin library holding outdoor concert June 9

The Chris Greene Quartet will perform from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 9, on the outdoor stage adjacent to the Gail Borden Public Library at 270 N. Grove Ave. in Elgin.

The group incorporates elements of jazz, funk, rap, rock, pop, blues and reggae into its performances, a library news release said. People are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner and a blanket or chair to the concert.

High school students sought for four city panels

The city of Elgin is accepting applications for high school students to serve on the Cultural Arts Commission, Human Relations Commission, Parks and Recreation Board and the Sustainability Commission.

Those chosen will gain leadership and research skills as they contribute to projects and initiatives within Elgin, a news release said. Sophomores, juniors and seniors from public and private high schools are eligible to serve one-year terms beginning in August.

Kane County offering COVID vaccine clinic June 11

The Kane County Health Department will hold a COVID-19 vaccine clinic Saturday, June 11, at the county’s vaccination hub in Batavia, officials said Wednesday.

The clinic will be open from 9 a.m. to noon at the mass vaccination site at 501 N. Randall Road.

All COVID-19 vaccines will be available for anyone 5 or older. Children between 5 and 11 can receive a booster vaccine five months after they completed their initial series of shots, officials said.

Wine Down Wednesday this week in East Dundee

East Dundee’s first Wine Down Wednesday of the season will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. June 8 outside The Depot, 319 N. River St.

The free event will feature music by One Night Band, a pop-rock band that plays Top 40 hits spanning six decades. Food, beer and wine will be available from the Anvil Club.

Attendees should bring lawn chairs as seating is limited. No outside alcoholic beverages are allowed.

Free family party planned for Elgin’s Wing Park pool

Light Up the Night Family Pool Party will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 11, at the Wing Park Family Aquatic Center, 1030 Wing St., Elgin.

Sponsored by the Elgin Parks and Recreation Foundation, the free event will feature games, prizes and giveaways. All children who attend must be accompanied by an adult guardian.
