Household hazardous waste collection event at Portage High School
The Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County will have its second household hazardous waste collection event on Saturday at Portage High School.
The event will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Portage High School, where participants should enter at Pan Am Boulevard. Secure Shred Document Destruction will be on site to help dispose of old or unwanted documents and papers. June 11 is the only date Secure Shred will be on site.
Old gas cans will be able to be exchanged at the event for for eco-friendly 2.5-gallon cans. The gas cans will be distributed on a first-come-first-serve basis. Porter County residents will also be able to dispose of clean and dry plastic bags, plastic film wraps, grocery bags, plastic wrapping and more. “Stand Down” event for veterans
VNA Hospice of Northwest Indiana will have an event for veterans in the community called “Porter County Stand Down,” inspired by the “stand downs” of the Vietnam era, which offered service members a break from combat to attend to personal needs.
The event, put on in partnership with the Porter County Community Foundation, will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. June 24 at the Porter County Expo Center and will provide veterans with the opportunity to obtain resources, benefits and other information from over 50 vendors.
Veterans of all eras and their families are invited to join, and a copy of a DD-214, Military ID or VA Health Care Card is requested to enter the event.
Valparaiso police accepting applications for crossing guard positions
The Valparaiso police department is accepting applications for full-time and part-time crossing guards to assist students in crossing streets at designated intersections throughout the City of Valparaiso.
The position will require morning and afternoon ability, and applications are due by 4 p.m. July 15. Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and pass a complete background check.
Applications can be picked up at the Valparaiso Police Department from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. More information will be included in the application packet or can be found on the Valparaiso Police Department Facebook page.
Portage summer concert series to begin in June
ReTurn2Soul will play June 14 as part of the Portage LIVE! summer concert series at Woodland Park. The free 13-concert series will take place every Tuesday night from 6-7:30 p.m. There will be open seating, food concessions, a cash bar and a car show before and during the music.
While the show is free, donations of nonperishable food, personal items or paper products for the Portage Food Pantry and Gabriel’s Horn Homeless Shelter are welcomed, according to a press release from the Portage Chamber of Commerce and Portage Parks.
