Crown Point Police to host Citizens Police Academy

The Crown Point Police Department (CPPD) is now accepting application for their Citizens Police Academy to be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays beginning Sept. 8 at Bulldog Park, 183 S. West St., Crown Point. The course includes an overview of the Crown Point Police Department; information on Indiana criminal and traffic law; use of force simulators; patrol tactics demonstrations; training from Ben’s Blue Bags; and presentations from the Indiana High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) program, Northwest Indiana Swat and CPPD. Class participants must be at least 18 years of age and a Crown Point resident. Applicants must have a clean criminal record to participate in the academy. Application deadline is 5 p.m. Sept. 2. Lakeshore Public Media presents Be My Neighbor Day

Lakeshore Public Media will host Be My Neighbor Day at Noon on Sept. 24 at Harvest Thyme Family Farm, 17904 Grant St., Lowell. Attendees will be able to meet Daniel Tiger from the PBS Kids series “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood” while learning about emergency preparedness and participating in various family-friendly activities. Harvest Thyme Family Farm offers paid admission for guests to a friendly environment for all ages. Be My Neighbor Day will take place in a designated area of the farm that will be free and open to the public. In recognition of September as Disaster Preparedness Month, the event will promote emergency preparedness. Flashlights and other items that children can use to start an emergency preparedness kits will be provided. Children also will make cards for first-responders, and learn about their local helpers. This aligns with the multi-platform effort “Meet the Helpers” inspired by Mr. Rogers’ initiative to look for the helpers in times of emergencies. Lakeshore Public Media will partner with the MAAC Foundation to distribute the cards to local first-responders. Unite and Fight Cancer Walk and 5K Run

After a two-year hiatus, the 17th annual Unite and Fight Cancer Walk and 5K Run will take place on Oct. 2. Registration begins at Noon at Munster High School’s John E. Friend Athletic Complex, 8808 Columbia Ave. Participants can choose from a 1-mile, 2.5-mile walk or at 3.1 mile/5K through Community Park. For children, there will be a 100-yard dash, and face painting by professional makeup artists. The rally also features vendors, a tribute to survivors and a picnic. The event is a fundraiser for the Cancer Resource Centre, a not-for-profit program of the Community Cancer Research Foundation. The Centre offers free classes, mind-body-spirit programs, support groups and clinical trial resources for cancer patients at locations throughout Northwest Indiana, including patients receiving medical treatment outside the Community Healthcare System. CURE offers online sessions for learners of all ages

IU Northwest’s Center for Urban and Regional Excellence (CURE) offers non-credit courses for learners of all ages with a wide range of free and low-cost courses include gardening, computers, smartphones, and reading skills. CURE is enrolling for four upcoming sessions through their Adult Education and Senior University. All classes are free. “Art in the American Jazz Age” will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday via Zoom.
