9/11 survivor to speak at remembrance ceremony Sunday

Retired Army Lt. Col. Ryan Yantis, who survived the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon, will speak at Naperville’s 21st annual remembrance ceremony Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Cmdr. Dan Shanower Memorial, north of the Naperville Municipal Center at 400 S. Eagle St.

The event starts at 10:45 a.m., and also will feature comments from Naperville Fire Chief Mark Puknaitis and Police Chief Jason Arres. The Naperville Municipal Band will perform for 15 minutes prior to the ceremony’s start.

Yantis, of Crystal Lake, is vice president of education and outreach for American Pride Inc., a nonprofit group that supports Sept. 11 survivors. He also collaborated with other survivors on the book, “9/11 Survivors’ Stories: Midwest Memories.”

The ceremony is hosted by the Exchange Club of Naperville and the city of Naperville. It pays tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York’s Twin Towers, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and in the plane crash in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Shanower, a Naperville native, was one of the victims at the Pentagon.

In the event of rain, the ceremony will be moved inside to the Municipal Center.
