The summerlike temperatures that have warmed Chicago to start the month will give way to cooler, seasonal conditions this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
The agency described Wednesday, when temperatures are expected to rise into the mid-80s, as “one last warm day.”
“Unfortunately, it’ll be the last abnormally warm day, at least for a little while,” NWS meteorologist Kevin Doom said.
After a stretch of temperatures around 15 degrees warmer than normal, a cold front will push into the city to bring rain and cool temps, Doom said.
Rain is likely Wednesday night and Thursday, when high temperatures are expected to dip to 69 degrees, the agency said. Friday is expected to include sun and showers, with highs in the low 60s.
The mostly sunny weekend features matching forecasts for Saturday and Sunday. Meteorologists predict Chicago will experience highs of 57 degrees, a low of 45 degrees and mostly sunny skies.
But there is some good news as Chicagoans begin to take down window air conditioning units and bust out the sweaters.
“Luckily, it looks like we should be back on the warmer side of normal maybe by the latter half of next week,” Doom said. “I don’t think we’ll get anywhere close to the mid-80s we’ve been seeing, but anything warmer than normal is obviously good.”
The big temperature swings are normal this time of the year for Chicago, Doom said. Temperatures were “pretty average” in the city throughout September, he added.
