An Glenwood, Illinois man charged with stabbing a co-worker at Methodist Hospital was found incompetent for trial on Sept. 27, according to court records.
But, Diandre Smith, 27, will have to wait before he is transferred to the custody of the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration.
He appeared in court briefly Friday.
The agency has a “terrible backup,” Judge Natalie Bokota told his lawyer Visvaldis Kupsis.
Another status court hearing is set for Nov. 17 to see where Smith is in line for a bed.
The lawyer asked to be notified when his client is transferred from the Lake County Jail. Bokota responded he’d have to talk to the jail, which does that directly.
Smith was charged with aggravated battery, battery by means of a deadly weapon and battery resulting in serious bodily injury, all felonies, according to court records.
He allegedly stabbed a man on May 23, 2022, who worked at Methodist Hospitals Southlake campus in the custodial department, in the face and chest area while they were in a locker room, according to the probable cause affidavit.
In a statement, Methodist Hospitals officials said then they were “aware of the incident.”
“Our first priority is always the safety of our staff and patients and we are cooperating fully with local law enforcement,” the statement read.
The custodial worker told police he only knew Smith as a kitchen worker and that he “didn’t know why this man would stab him,” according to the affidavit. The custodial worker said he was in the locker room with his back to the door when he felt something slash his face, according to the affidavit.
When he turned around, he saw Smith allegedly holding a black folding knife with a four-inch blade, according to the affidavit. Smith then allegedly stabbed the custodial worker again, but the man was able to shove Smith away and fend him off with a chair, according to the affidavit.
Smith then left the locker room, and the custodial worker followed Smith before making it to the cafeteria, according to the affidavit. In the cafeteria, officers responded to calls for security and for the rapid response team to help an injured person, according to the affidavit.
An officer who went to the cafeteria reported seeing “an older male sitting in a chair with a puddle of blood underneath him and observed a woman holding pressure on the man’s chest,” according to the affidavit. The custodial worker was taken in an office chair to triage, according to the affidavit.
The food services manager said Smith was scheduled to work from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, and that around 3:30 p.m. he told her needed to use the washroom. A short time later, the stabbing occurred, according to the affidavit.
