A man was sentenced to two years probation Thursday after admitting he attacked a man helping his ex-wife move out in Dyer.

Robert Alan Cox, Jr., 40, of Schererville, admitted to battery resulting in moderate bodily injury, a level 6 felony. He also has to undergo anger management and repay $2,000 to the other man.

In his plea agreement, Cox admitted beating the man in the head and body with a baseball bat.

In a criminal affidavit, the victim told police he went to a home on the 1400 block of Greenwood Avenue at 9 a.m. Tuesday to help a woman he knew move out of the house.

Cox showed up uninvited, going inside with a baseball bat to tell the woman, his ex-wife, he would kill the other man, the affidavit states.

The victim was sitting in his truck taking a break when Cox started smashing it, then broke the driver’s side window, before pulling out the man and beating him repeatedly with the bat in the head and body.

The man managed to wrestle him to the ground before Cox pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the leg, the affidavit stated Police arrived shortly afterward and separated both men.

The man was transported via ambulance with multiple injuries — needing five staples to close a deep cut on his head, five stitches for his leg, a broken thumb and blood loss.
